Manifesto

The internet used to feel
warmer than this.

This is a short document about what we believe, what we refuse to build, and the kind of internet we're trying to keep alive. If any of it resonates, you're who we made Vesper for.

01The premise

Somewhere along the way, the social internet stopped being social. It became a stage. A grid. A metric. The point of being online stopped being “talk to someone” and started being “perform for someone.”

The math is hard to ignore. The richest companies in human history were built by making strangers into audiences, and audiences into ad inventory. The product, in the end, was loneliness — packaged as engagement.

We don't think this was inevitable. We think it was a choice. And we think there's another choice still available.

02What we believe

  • Conversation is the unit, not content. A real five-minute talk beats a thousand likes. Always has.
  • Anonymity, used well, makes people more honest, not less. The cruelty of anonymous forums was a moderation failure, not a property of anonymity itself.
  • You should be able to leave any room without explaining. Endings are part of social design. Most apps get them wrong.
  • Moods are more honest than identities. Who you are is large and contradictory. What you're feeling right now is small and matchable.
  • The best social product is one you close feeling better than you opened it. Everything we build is measured against that.

03What we refuse to build

A short list of features we know how to build and will not ship.

  • Public follower counts. The single most corrosive number in social product history.
  • Streaks. They work — that's the problem. We won't exploit habit-loops to fake retention.
  • Algorithmic feeds you can't turn off. If we ever build a feed, you'll be able to switch it off in one tap and it'll stay off.
  • Ad targeting based on what you said in a conversation. The contents of your chats are not training data, marketing signal, or model fodder. Ever.

04An invitation

If you read this far, you already know whether this is for you. Vesper is small, and it is built for a specific kind of person — the kind who's tired of performing and would rather just talk to someone for five minutes.

Come find a stranger in the same mood as you. Stay if it's nice. Leave if it's not. That's the whole product.
