Why we deleted the follower count before we shipped

Effective May 5, 2026Version 6 min read

Two days before launch we had a working follower system. We pulled it. Here's the argument that won — and what it cost us in our analytics graphs.

For most of the year, Vesper had a follower count. It wasn't loud — small grey number under your handle — but it was there. The case for keeping it was easy: every social app has one, users expect it, and our retention dashboards loved it. The case for removing it was harder, and we lost the argument internally three separate times before we finally won it.

What the number was actually doing

Once we instrumented the feature properly, the follower count wasn't a measure of connection. It was a tax on showing up. People with low numbers posted less. People with high numbers posted more, but more carefully — they were managing the number, not having conversations. The thing that was supposed to encourage interaction was quietly throttling it.

The two-day rewrite

We pulled the count, rewrote the profile surface around an anonymous handle, and replaced the social proof it provided with something we now call aura — a private signal only the app can see. The migration was 1,400 lines. We shipped it on a Friday and watched the dashboards on Saturday.

Sessions per user dropped 14% in week one. Messages sent per session went up 31%. People came back less often, but when they did, they actually talked.

What it cost us

The honest answer: a chart that would have looked great in a fundraising deck. The honest answer also: a class of growth tactic we can no longer use. Without a public number to chase, we can't run the loops that other social apps run, and we've made our peace with that.

If you've used Vesper and wondered why your profile feels so empty — that's the point. It isn't a stage. It's a doorway.
